Bold. Authentic. Progressive.
Michelle Walks the Walk

A Democrat running in Michigan's State Senate District 18, County Commissioner Michelle Deatrick offers an authentic progressive vision for building a movement to take back our state and country from the forces of big money. She will work to create a Michigan that values people over profit, with a future that offers hope and opportunity to all.
From picket line to podium, Michelle works closely with grassroots activists and community members--and she's committed to continue doing so when she's in Lansing. Michelle led a coalition of progressive groups to organize the Ann Arbor Women’s March: more than 11,000 people marched in solidarity–and in 2018, she did it again. When lecturers at a public university were threatened with 25% pay cuts, she stood with them. With gas pipelines threatening children’s safety, she's fighting back.
With her strong background in public policy and teaching, Michelle knows that we must invest in our public schools to create vibrant classrooms where our children thrive. As an environmental advocate and co-founder of the Michigan Small Farm Council, she works to preserve our small and family farms. A former Peace Corps Volunteer in rural Kenya, Michelle is dedicated to creating a more equal Michigan with a growing number of good-paying jobs and a tax system that doesn't favor big business--because we need an economy and government that work for everyone.
More than ever, it’s crucial to elect leaders like Michelle with a record of working together to solve problems. Michelle represents a purple district, and won her County Commission seat by beating a three-term Republican incumbent: one of a very few seats flipped to Democrat in 2016 Michigan. Her work with local elected officials and constituents involves working “across the aisle” every day: she has successfully built relationships and works on issues--such as increasing rural broadband and health care access--in service of all her constituents, without sacrificing core values. Michelle's colleagues have recognized her leadership, electing her Vice Chair of the County Commission.
